Will Spates Founder

William H Spates III is the founder and former president of Indoor Environmental Technologies (IET) that was established in 1992. Will was an impassioned industry leader, industry instructor and customer advocate. Compassionate and focused on making a difference, he began his career in Indoor air quality after purchasing a home that made him sick. In the 15 years prior to becoming an Environmental Consultant, he was a corporate yacht captain and noticed when he went to sea his allergies would disappear. This set him on a path of inquiry that would introduce him to Bau-Biologie & Ecology. After taking his first course Will said, “I was hooked and never looked back.”

Early in his career as instructor for The International Institute for Bau-biologie & Ecology, he began a 38-year mission by touching people’s lives and by returning their homes to a safe environment. As an instructor for IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) and the IAQA (Indoor Air Quality Association) Will served on the committees to develop and write the industry standards for Indoor Air Quality. Years of mold detection and analysis found that unvented attics would cause mold formation on the internal structures. Working with his colleague Tim Toburen, they named the phenomenon ‘cold attic syndrome’ and shared their findings with the rest of the industry through a detailed article many years before anyone else caught on.

IET continues to carry on his passion for helping people and providing superior service for all that need our assistance. We were privileged to know Will and look forward to continuing his purpose.
