Hydrogen sulfide and methane accumulate wherever sewage sits. Hydrogen sulfide produces that classic “rotten egg” smell. At higher concentrations, it deadens your olfactory nerves, which means your inability to smell it anymore tells you nothing about whether the air is safe.   • Photograph before moving anything. Take wide shots to establish the layout of the room, followed by close-up shots of standing water lines, saturated materials, and the visible source of the leak.
  • Record a strict timeline. Note when you first discovered the water, when you shut off the mains, when the HVAC was powered down, and when any professional or neighbor entered the space.
  • Keep what you remove. If you must throw away contaminated materials immediately for safety, photograph them clearly before tossing them in the dumpster.
  • Get independent testing before the cleanup. This is the crucial step most homeowners miss. Once a remediation crew brings in the sledgehammers and air scrubbers, the pre-cleanup condition is gone. Your only proof of the initial severity is whatever data was captured beforehand.

Hard, non-porous surfaces such as tile or glass can usually be cleaned and then disinfected, strictly in that order.
